Winter in New Castle County brings freezing nights, icy driveways and the occasional snowstorm. Your garage door feels all of it. Metal parts contract in the cold, grease gets thick, and rubber seals turn stiff. Most winter breakdowns can be avoided with a few simple checks before the worst weather arrives.

Here is the checklist our technicians use, written so any homeowner can follow it.

1. Watch and listen to the door

Stand inside the garage and run the door through a full open and close. A healthy door moves smoothly and fairly quietly. Pay attention if you notice any of these:

  • Grinding, scraping or loud banging
  • Jerky movement or the door stopping partway
  • One side of the door rising faster than the other
  • The opener straining or humming without moving the door

These are early warning signs. In cold weather, small problems tend to get worse quickly, so it is better to get them checked now than on a freezing morning.

2. Look at the springs and cables

The springs above the door, or along the sides on some doors, carry almost the whole weight of the door. Cold makes steel more likely to snap, which is why many spring failures happen in winter.

From a safe distance, look for a gap in a coiled torsion spring, rust, or frayed lift cables at the bottom corners of the door. Do not touch, adjust or try to tighten springs yourself. They are under very high tension and can cause serious injury. If something looks wrong, read our guide on what to do when a garage door spring breaks and call a professional.

3. Lubricate the moving parts

Thick, old grease makes the opener work harder in the cold. Use a garage door lubricant (a silicone or lithium spray made for garage doors) on:

  • Hinges between the panels
  • Steel rollers and their bearings (skip nylon rollers)
  • Springs, with a light coat
  • The opener rail, if your opener manual recommends it

Do not grease the tracks themselves. Wipe them clean instead, because grease in the tracks collects dirt and slows the rollers down.

4. Check the weather seal at the bottom

The rubber seal along the bottom of the door keeps out cold air, snow and water. Close the door and look for daylight underneath. If the seal is cracked, flattened or torn, it is time to replace it.

In winter, the seal can also freeze to the ground. If the door won't open on a cold morning, don't force it with the opener. That can damage the opener or tear the seal. Gently free the seal first, then try again. Keeping snow and ice cleared away from the bottom of the door helps prevent this.

5. Test the safety features

Every modern opener has two safety sensors near the floor and an auto-reverse feature. Snow, ice or salt spray can block the sensors. Wipe the lenses and make sure both lights are steady. Our troubleshooting videos show how to check sensors in a couple of minutes.

Then test auto-reverse: place a piece of wood or a roll of paper towels on the floor under the door and close it. The door should reverse when it touches the object. If it doesn't, stop using the opener until it has been adjusted.

6. Replace remote and keypad batteries

Batteries lose power faster in the cold. If your remote or outdoor keypad has felt weak lately, replace the batteries now so you are not stuck outside in the snow.

When to call a professional

Call us if the door is crooked, a spring or cable looks damaged, the opener struggles, or the door fails the auto-reverse test. A yearly tune-up is the best way to avoid surprises. We check springs, cables, rollers, tracks, the opener and safety features, and explain anything that needs attention before work starts.
